FAQ’S FOR INDUSTRY-ACADEMIA MEET
What is technocracy?
It is a platform to promote and coordinate research and development by students through student-industry interaction giving students freedom and opportunities to work upon diverse areas of business, technology and existing industrial and national problems as well as pursue their own ideas so as to become innovators.
The initiative is a support system for all the people who wish or dream to do get in hand work experience thorough practical projects and complete their technical part of personality. It is mainly aimed at providing work experience starting right from 1st year, uplifting the technological standards of students as well as the institute, smoothing the process before and while doing the project and bringing the culture of enjoying them rather than completing them as a burden.
What is the Industry Academia Meet?
The Industry Academia Meet is a meet being organized by Technocracy wherein around 50 companies and government Institutions along with about 25 colleges from NCR will be participating. The Meet, to be held on the 7th of November, will be a forum where the industry representatives and student bodies will be able to discuss issues related to industry- academia collaboration in projects of importance, either in the private domain or of national level importance.
Why is the Industry Academia Meet being conducted?
In general, a number of companies and government organizations are always interested in working with institutes and academia in solving technological problems or working on new ideas since they can then tap into a wide pool of fresh ideas in the student community. However, they usually face a number of hurdles in the matters such as contact persons in IIT, existence of student interest in their projects, Intellectual Property rights issues (who will hold patents, research paper collaboration) , funding for projects and many other such hurdles. On the other hand, the student community also tends to feel deprived of opportunities to work upon industrial level projects to gain hands-on experience of industry level work. In order to discuss the above issues and arrive at a consensus, we plan to organize this meet so that we develop a structure where Industry-Academia interaction becomes easy and feasible.
What will be the number of companies from each department?
Due to the limited number of companies per department we can call, we will be inviting around 5 of them per department. However, you are required to inquire about as many companies as possible, atleast 10 of them as some companies might easily decline our invitations. Also, try to enquire from the professor or HOD if there is any requirement of special preference for any company and then submit the list to me with a preference order of companies per department. If the possibility arises, we may be able to invite more companies than the above 5 limit.
What will be the basis of Preference for the companies?
The following points can be taken into consideration while determining the priority listing of companies:
- Past relationship with IIT if any (if companies have worked before, then they will be ready to work again)
- Probability of starting a project with IIT (can enquire from prof.)
- Local industries preference (even if they have local offices)
Is it specific for only private companies?
No, the Meet is NOT specifically targeted at private companies. On the other hand, we would prefer that more and more government organizations are invited to the meet.
What will be the arrangements for the company representatives?
We would prefer that the companies with a Delhi office send a representative from there and arrange for their own transportation. However if the representatives are from outside Delhi NCR, we will arrange for their accommodation and stay. This will require the companies to intimate to us the above necessity as soon as possible due to the limited availability of accommodation.
Where are we getting the funding?
Our funding sources will be as follows:
- Department of Science and Technology (govt. of India) has promised us assistance.
- CII, CSIR and other govt. organizations are willing.
- FITT-IITD, similar body in IITK
- Funding from IITD & IITK.
- Sponsorships.
Why would companies give us sponsorships?
The benefits we are offering them are:
- Image Publicity in Scientific Community: Their brand would be featured on every poster, banner, flex, brochure that we present during the meet.
- Media coverage: The Meet would be covered by the leading print media and TV channels and would help publicize their name.
- Scientific Community and Student Publicity: The student and scientific community would be exposed to the company’s research interest and would wish to collaborate with them for the required projects, allowing them to avail more economical R&D.
